Cage
of Feathers Several of my carvings have featured cages of one sort or another. The brother of a friend of mine once described his situation, the owner of a considerable estate, as a gilded cage. For some reason this left a deep impression on me; I could not imagine how having so much could be anything other than a pleasurable thing. My understanding is still only academic. This cage, while not gilded, implies a certain co-operation and indeed the cage resembles, to a certain extent, a heart. Unlike 'Three Feathers' (see Gallery) where a broken feather is evidence of a battle, here I have tried to carve a piece which is tender, willing and innocent of discord. Perhaps because of its small size ( 1 ½" long) or its colour, this carving seems to speak of youth, the slight disarray is charming not distressing. The carving is light and thin but is nevertheless strong, the himotoshi is formed by one of the quills. The signature is engraved on a quill. ![]() |
