CATFISH I call this piece 'Catfish' but in reality it is like no catfish I have ever seen- 'Flatfish' would be more appropriate but that somehow seems to lack gravitas. I originally had in mind the Numazu, the earthquake fish of Japanese mythology, but then I found I had carved two of them sharing the same body and changed my mind. A breeding pair of Numazu, after all, is an awesome thought! It is made from a cross- section of Fossil Walrus about 3/4" (2cm) thick and was specifically designed to be held in the hand, the thumb naturally resting in the concave part of the underneath, where the fins are. The signature is engraved underneath. 1 1/2" (4cm) diameter. |
