COCO
Boxwood
This was commissioned by clients who had just lost a much loved King Charles Spaniel. Working from photographs, I started it twice in Mammoth but each time the material split when I was a week into the work. I was therefore forced to carve it in boxwood instead. I have portrayed her in a strong wind, looking back over her shoulder as if to say 'Hurry up!'
I later discovered this to be entirely apt as in her old age she couldn't wait to get back into the warm after a walk - although I had envisaged her to be enjoying herself rather more and in exploring mode. I was given several photos to work with and chose those showing her when younger. The photos of her in old age made her look like a slightly grumpy Shishi, sitting obviously unwillingly on a table. I would have loved to carve her in this way but unfortunately thought of it too late. Maybe one day...
Coco is shown slightly larger than life-size, the signature engraved beside the himotoshi.
Coco is 2.25" (5.75cm) long.
