Mammoth
and Amber (height 1 3/4")
At first sight this carving may seem a little macabre... A fossilized
human mouth emerges from a tightly-packed conglomeration of fossil remains,
as if gasping for air. From our scholarly, yet still very sketchy reconstruction
of the Earth's history it would appear that life on Earth exists despite
the planet's periodic attempts to rid itself of it's parasites. It would
be unrealistic to imagine that our species would not suffer the same fate
should a meteor or supervolcano take evolution by the throat, even in
the far-forseeable future.
By juxtaposing fossil
and human remains I merely point out that human life is only a Kahoutec-size
event away from total extinction anyway; irrespective of any damage we
may ourselves have done to the planet. I find this strangely reassuring!
Furthermore,
who is to say that this has not already happened? Our methods of reassembling
the historical jigsaw rely as much on what we don't find as to what we
do. So in justifying this image all I can say is that we have not found
a similar fossil yet...
