OLD MAN WITH BONSAI
Mammoth
Completely out of the blue one day early this year I had a phone call from an Englishman new to the netsuke scene asking me if I took commissions and would I be interested in carving an old man tending a bonsai tree. I accepted immediately, of course, and started on some sketches for him. The old man was to be an Oriental but otherwise the brief was left up to me.

Working on the sketches, it struck me as an amusing thought that the old man whilst pruning his tree might cut part of his beard off by accident. We see him here, peering short-sightedly, just at the point where he realizes too late his mistake . Unfortunately the photos do not show the tree up very well but it is an old Japanese White Pine in a windswept style. I seldom carve figures but really enjoyed making this one, as I hope is apparent from the photos.
