Silent
Flute
How
poignant a thing is a broken flute!
The relationship between a musician and his instrument is as intimate
as any he forms with another human, and without doubt a well-played instrument
gets better and better. So how came this flute to be broken? Whether an
accident befell it or whether it was snapped in a brief madness, it lies
in the undergrowth to be ravished by a briar rose. Its sojourn is confirmed
by a web spun deep inside and abandoned by a long gone spider. People
ask me why I did not include one of my famous spiders inside? Well, this
story has no sting in the tail. Rather it is a quiet contemplation of
the vagaries of life.
