TUNDRA
This is quite a departure from my usual work. I was looking to carve a design for this knife which was redolent of the forests and bleak spaces in Finland where the blade comes from. I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to visit Yakutsk near the arctic circle in Siberia and I well remember the sight of mist rising from the tundra in early morning. In an effort to describe the scene I chose a flowing line and muted colours, browns for the earth, pale blues and gold for the smokey wisps ascending through the pale rays of the sun. The rhythm and flow of the lines were most important to depict the lazy moment when warmth starts to permeate the ground. The handle is made from Red Deer, the scabbard, again, from Fallow and the fixing from leather. The handle of the knife is signed on 22ct gold.
